The Morrissey/Marr breakup was a given. They made some beautiful music together as The Smiths. Was I skeptical about Morrissey’s debut Viva Hate? A little. But it was right on time as I was moving from 15 to 16 years of age. From 12 years of age his words were solidly in my mind. Marr’s music was perfect. Would anyone, could anyone replace Marr? No. But this was good and didn’t need the comparison.

Now at 53, I’m giving the full album a go. I’m not disappointed. There are some favorites that will always be enjoyed. I can’t remember the specific reason for each, but recall there is a feeling that hits me when listening. A friend, a fight, a fiance, all times lived and remembered, maybe best forgotten.
